ARTEMIS

By: Andy Weir

Plot: About a girl, Jazz, who lives and practically grew up on the moon. She is offered a "job" for a lot of money. The job goes wrong and her life turns into chaos.

My Thoughts: I bought this for my husband for Christmas a couple years ago and I finally got around to reading it myself. We both liked The Martian, but unfortunately this book just wasn't as good. The author needs to stick to writing male characters because it was blatantly obvious that the female protagonist was written by a man. To me, at least. He made her crude, overly sexual, and I don't know what else, but I just didn't like it. She also over explained EVERYTHING!  His writing is very funny and there were a few lines that I thought were pretty clever. I really liked the emails from young Jazz and her pen pal and wished there was more.

The plot was not my favorite. It kind of played out like a bad movie. It was so slow at the beginning and then once the action finally started I found myself thinking is this all this book is about? The science is also not my favorite . I just couldn't visualize what she was even doing sometimes. That could just be my own disinterest though. The ending was way too extreme, with Jazz now responsible for saving the entire moon colony. Even when the author was trying to be sentimental with Jazz and her dad, it just seemed awkward and out of place. And the condom thing was just gross and weird and unnecessary to the entire plot! Why??

Favorite Quotes: "That's the thing about crying yourself to sleep. When you wake up, the problems are still there."

'First thing I did was a visual examination.'
'You looked at it,' I said. 'You can just say I looked at it.'

Rating: 3/5 It was okay. Honestly the funny parts were what made the book for me.
